In the spirit of the foundation documents that Antonio Saura himself drew up, the foundation should “become an active place in which diverse cultural manifestations take place”.

Antonio Saura wanted the Casa Zavala to be somewhere where a significant proportion of his plastic work could be viewed, but in seeking to avoid it from becoming an “artistic mausoleum”, he proposed from the beginning “the need to hold a variety of activities, symposia, conferences and particularly exhibitions of a thematic or monographic nature” which were related to his “emotional universe”, evidently characterised by a radical modernity and independence from the purely fashionable. In this sense, all the artistic submissions presented at the Foundation form part of aspects that interested Saura himself, so concerned with giving coverage and space to “artists considered to be marginal” or to “generally unattended aspects of creativity”.

The Casa Zavala, headquarters of the Antonio Saura Foundation, has therefore been, since its opening, a space dedicated to multiple contemporary plastic expressions and within its exhibition rooms, as well as paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, projections and illustrations, concerts have been held, together with presentations and didactic workshops.
