Women and Monsters. Photographs by Carlos Saura
[ From 15th of January to 15th of April 2009 ]
Within the framework of the institutional collaboration developed by the Antonio Saura Foundation in recent months, of note is the special relationship maintained with the Art Circle of Barcelona. As a consequence of this contact came, amongst other initiatives, the assembly of an important exhibition of photographs by Carlos Saura entitled "Women and Monsters", in which the photographer and film-maker covers two of his most recurrent visual themes, the familiar feminine world and the no less intimate image of his brother Antonio, to whom he was linked by bonds of brotherly love and artistic exchange throughout the whole of his life. The Antonio Saura Foundation contributed to the aforementioned exhibition with two series of works that form part of its endowment: on the one hand the photographs that Carlos Saura made of his brother in 1974, the so-called "Essays on my brother" (donated by Carlos to the foundation); and the group of serigraphs which, by way of replica, Antonio Saura made under the title "Moi. Anti-portraits", published by Gustavo Gili in 1976 (similarly donated from the publisher himself). The exhibition was completed with photographs chosen from the personal archives of Carlos Saura in which he portrays the women who have most directly formed part of his life.
