Photography Exhibition "Cartagena from the Front"
[ From 1st of October to 17th of November of 2010 ]
The photography exhibition "Cartagena de frente" ("Cartagena from the Front") demonstrates an original way of looking at the city of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). The facades of its most representative buildings are taken in their entirety and their full extension recorded, without distortions or forced perspectives. It consists, therefore, of images of up to 7 metres in length which evoke the sensation of moving "in situ" through the streets of the city itself.
From a selection of photographs taken by Antonio Castañeda Buraglia, Colombian restorer, architect and photographer, a laborious reconstruction of the buildings takes place, in shots which provide a perfect sensation of pictorial levelling; as well as great precision of record, in relation to the multiplicity of the architectural elements and materials which populate them, conferring upon the result an impactful visual effect. In the words of Antonio Castañeda himself:
"To pursue this methodology a number of photos at different levels had to be taken until attaining the height of the building. The first, at street level; then, with the help of scaffolding, we progressed in height, and lastly, with the help of a crane, the highest levels were shot. The images presented in both the book and the exhibition are in some cases made up of over one hundred individual photographs".
